There were a lot of things that I really liked about How To Train Your Dragon 2. It was stunningly animated, did fairly well by the characters that we met in the first one and expanded the world rather than retreading the first story.
5 years after our hero Hiccup and his NIght Fury Dragon Toothless brought peace between the dragons and the village of Berk, Hiccup has been exploring the world outside, looking for people and dragons and trying to spread the gospel of dragon riding. He’s also making a large and detailed map. His father Stoic wants him to take his place Cheif of Berk and Hiccup is worried he doesn’t have what it takes.
While flying one day with Astrid (Can I digress for a minute and just state how much I love this character. She’s underused here, but god, she’s so great.) They find a fort of dragon catches led by Erit, son of Erit They’ve been attacked by an ice dragon and Erit is voiced by Kit Harrington, so by CSD went into overdrive.
I should note, that Erit also knows nothing. And that capturing dragons is no way to get Khalessi to love you.
Anyway, Erit is working for Drago Bloodvest, a villain who’s decided to build a dragon army. Stoic suggests that they fortify Berk and Hiccup decides to go negotiate. Astrid goes with him, but he’s quickly whisked off by a mysterious dragon rider. This turns out to be his mother, Varka, and Stoic also finds them. The newly reunited family and the riders of Berk fight Drago, but at a cost.
How To Train Your Dragon 2 is a good sequel, but doesn’t hit the heights of the first one and certainly doesn’t tug on the heart strings the same way. I was impressed with the way they let the characters grow, and kept expecting a half baked love triangle between Hiccup, Astrid and Erit to surface. I was grateful that it didn’t.
Varka was an interesting addition, and if the series moves forward I think she’ll continue to be. We’ll see though.
- Godzilla (I don’t know how anything is going to pass it…)
- X-Men: Days of Future Past
- How To Train Your Dragon 2
- Jersey Boys
- The Amazing Spider-Man 2
Penguins of Madagascar: I will not be seeing this. I like the Madagascar series fine, but these kind of spinoffs rarely work.
The Book of Life: This looks super cool. It’s about time DelToro took on animation.
Annie: every stinking time, this movie looks better and better. I really can’t wait to see it.
